In partnership with the Department of Social Development, the Department has intensified its efforts to combat hunger and promote sustainable livelihoods through the Food Security Programme. The initiative delivered critical support to vulnerable households and community projects across the region.
As part of the intervention, 300 families received food parcels aimed at alleviating immediate food insecurity. This direct support ensured that households facing economic challenges had access to essential nutrition.
To promote long-term self-sufficiency, 10 households were equipped with garden tools to help establish and maintain home gardens. The goal is to encourage residents to grow their own food, reduce dependency on external aid, and strengthen household resilience.
The Rekaofela Community Kaofela Project also benefited significantly from the programme. The project received seedlings, garden tools, and a JoJo water tank to support and expand its community gardening efforts. This investment will improve productivity and enable the project to supply more fresh produce to local residents.
In addition, the North West School of the Deaf received eggs and vegetables to supplement its nutrition and school feeding programme. The donation will enhance the dietary needs of learners and contribute to better health and concentration in the classroom.
These interventions reflect MEC Madoda Sambatha’s ongoing commitment to tackling food insecurity and empowering communities. By combining immediate relief with long-term support, the Food Security Programme promotes sustainable livelihoods and community resilience.
The Department continues to encourage partnerships between government, communities, and local organizations to strengthen food production and ensure that no household is left behind in the fight against hunger.
