The Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), through its Extension and Advisory Services, hosted a Vegetable Production Information Day today at Glass Palace in Bloemfontein. The event brought together farmers, agricultural experts, and local government representatives to share knowledge and practical solutions to strengthen vegetable farming in the province.

Dr. Lefu Maphalla from Extension and Advisory Services in Mangaung Metro opened the session by outlining the purpose of the day. He explained that the gathering aimed to equip farmers with relevant information on vegetable production, especially in dealing with challenges such as climate change. “Farmers need to be well informed and prepared to adapt to changing conditions,” said Dr. Maphalla.

Mr. Prem Sooknanan, General Manager responsible for Rural Development at Mangaung Metro Municipality, attended the event along with his team. Their presence reflected the Municipality’s continued support for agricultural development and its commitment to empowering local farmers through education and resources.

A key highlight of the day was a presentation by Ms. Phomolo Tshisevhe from the Agricultural Research Council (ARC). She discussed effective vegetable management and production techniques, emphasizing that success in farming begins with careful planning and the right materials. “Every farmer who thinks about vegetable production must equally think of the planting material, from the choice of the cultivar to the selection of implements and site,” said Tshisevhe. Her talk provided valuable insight into best practices that improve both yield and quality in vegetable farming.

Mr. Thabo Olivier from Let’s Grow Food (Pty) Ltd delivered an engaging presentation on urban agriculture. He discussed the growing importance of small-scale activities like backyard and community gardens and larger projects such as rooftop farms, vertical farming, and aquaponics. He noted that urban agriculture offers a sustainable solution to food insecurity, creates employment, and promotes community participation in food production.

The final presentation was given by Mr. Teboho Mokwaqa from Extension and Advisory Services in Mangaung. He focused on water harvesting, explaining its critical role in ensuring consistent crop production in water-scarce environments. His session guided farmers on low-cost water collection methods, storage techniques, and efficient irrigation systems suitable for small and medium-scale producers.

The Vegetable Production Information Day provided an important platform for farmers to learn, connect, and access expert advice. It also reinforced DARD’s commitment to supporting food security and sustainable farming practices through continuous education and farmer empowerment.

By combining scientific knowledge, practical demonstrations, and local experience, the event encouraged farmers to adopt innovative methods that strengthen productivity and resilience in vegetable production across the Mangaung region.
