The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), through its Landcare and Soil Conservation Unit, held a Landcare awareness session today at Glass Palace in Bloemfontein. The initiative aims to revive Landcare committees in farming communities to tackle local environmental challenges and promote sustainable resource management.

The session focused on capacity building, consultation, and active participation to ensure that all community members have a voice in environmental decision-making. Landcare encourages responsible land use, enhances community well-being, and supports long-term environmental sustainability.

Mr Chris Smith delivered a keynote presentation highlighting the importance of Landcare. He explained that Landcare is a committee-based environmental management initiative that empowers local residents to take action on environmental issues in their areas. According to Smith, the approach balances community needs with the protection of natural resources, offering a sustainable model for environmental management.

Participants discussed ways to address soil erosion, land degradation, and water resource management while promoting community-led solutions. The session also aimed to strengthen collaboration among farmers, local leaders, and environmental stakeholders to ensure practical and lasting outcomes.

By revitalising Landcare committees, DARD seeks to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainable farming practices that benefit both communities and future generations. The initiative reinforces the critical role of local engagement in preserving natural resources and maintaining productive agricultural landscapes.
