Boere Koporasie Beperk (BKB) Livestock Auctioneers, in partnership with the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) Vhembe West Agro-Ecological Zone, held the second day of their marketing drive information sessions yesterday in the Dzanani sub-zone. The initiative, which began at Mashamba TVET College on October 8, 2025, targets farmers from the eastern part of the Vhembe West Agro-Ecological Zone.
The information day focuses on educating farmers about livestock auctions as a value-adding business model that can improve returns. Participants received training on essential farming principles, biosecurity measures, animal movement regulations, and the importance of branding, all of which directly affect auction prices.
Rural livestock farmers in Limpopo often face market instability, especially during dry seasons when livestock prices can drop sharply. Team leader Riaan Ferreira highlighted that local auctions bring the market closer to the community and reduce transportation costs, creating a more accessible and profitable option for farmers.
Farmers learned about factors that influence auction prices, including the quality, age, and breed of animals, as well as broader market conditions. Ms. Lebogang Farland, an Animal Health Technician in Vhembe West, briefed participants on regulations for animal movement and the critical role of branding in traceability and disease control. She stressed the importance of keeping Makhado a disease-free zone, particularly against foot-and-mouth disease, to protect livestock and support local economies.
The sessions encouraged farmers to adopt best practices in livestock management, promoting sustainable farming and enhancing profitability. The BKB and LDARD initiative provides practical tools and guidance to help rural farmers navigate market challenges and benefit fully from organized livestock auctions.
