The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) participated in the 2025 Agricultural Development Agency (AGDA) Stakeholder Engagement, joining government, private sector, and research partners to explore how innovation and collaboration can strengthen South Africa’s agricultural value chains. The engagement focused on building partnerships that connect smallholder farmers, agribusinesses, and research institutions to drive inclusive and sustainable growth.
Dr. Chaminuka, Executive Manager for Research Support and Coordination at the ARC, contributed to a panel discussion titled “Connected Shared Value Chains – Innovation and Technology as a Bridge.” He highlighted the ARC’s role in ensuring that agricultural research is effectively translated into real economic and social value across all sectors of the industry.
During the session, Dr. Chaminuka emphasized that technology and data-driven decision-making are key to improving efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness in agriculture. He noted that the ARC’s research efforts are increasingly focused on developing practical solutions that can be adopted by farmers at different scales, from emerging producers to large commercial operations.
The discussion also addressed the need for stronger linkages between research institutions and the private sector. Dr. Chaminuka explained that innovation must be driven by both scientific insight and market needs to ensure relevance and impact. He added that collaboration across the agricultural value chain can help bridge knowledge gaps and enable faster adoption of new technologies such as precision farming, climate-smart practices, and biotechnology.
The AGDA Stakeholder Engagement served as a platform to align national agricultural strategies with global sustainability goals. Participants explored opportunities to improve access to finance, expand agri-tech adoption, and enhance market participation for smallholder farmers.
ARC representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting South Africa’s agricultural transformation through evidence-based research, capacity building, and strategic partnerships. The organization continues to invest in innovation that strengthens food security, creates employment, and promotes competitiveness in both domestic and export markets.
The 2025 AGDA Stakeholder Engagement underscored a shared vision for a connected and resilient agricultural system where technology and collaboration serve as the foundation for long-term growth and inclusivity.
