The 8th Annual Potatoes South Africa (Potatoes SA) Transformation Symposium is underway at The Ranch Hotel in Polokwane, under the theme: “Old Roots, New Shoots – Revitalising and Fostering New Relationships.” This two-day event serves as a collaborative platform for farmers, government representatives, researchers, and private sector stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and drive transformation in South Africa’s potato industry.

Day One of the symposium focuses on engagement sessions, outlining key objectives, and conducting project site visits across the Capricorn District potato belt. A highlight is a visit to Nkukeng Farming, a successful enterprise owned by Mr. Vincent Rapeta in Manthata, Limpopo.

Vincent’s journey from a 1-hectare potato trial in 2021 to 15 hectares of production today demonstrates the impact of the Potatoes SA Enterprise Development Programme, in partnership with the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, and the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. His farm exemplifies how mentorship, financial support, and mechanisation can transform small-scale operations into sustainable agribusinesses. Nkukeng Farming now employs up to 100 seasonal workers and plans further expansion, contributing to local employment, food security, and rural economic growth.

For farmers, the symposium provides an opportunity to learn modern potato farming techniques, explore best practices, and engage with experts who can help scale their operations. Government representatives use the platform to reinforce the importance of targeted agricultural support and transformation initiatives that deliver tangible results. The private sector benefits from opportunities for collaboration, investment, and innovation, ensuring the industry remains competitive and inclusive.

The 8th Annual Potatoes SA Transformation Symposium highlights the potential of collective effort to grow a new generation of skilled and empowered farmers. By connecting stakeholders across the sector, the event promotes sustainable growth, industry transformation, and the long-term success of South Africa’s potato industry.
