South Africa is one of the world’s leading producers of macadamia nuts. The industry has grown rapidly over the past two decades, supported by suitable climates, strong global demand, and ongoing investment. While several provinces grow macadamias, three regions dominate production: Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo. Emerging areas in the Eastern and Western Cape are also beginning to attract attention.
Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga is a traditional stronghold for macadamia farming. The Lowveld areas around Hazyview, White River, Nelspruit, and Barberton are prime production zones. Warm temperatures, good rainfall, and established irrigation systems support consistent yields. Mpumalanga has seen steady expansion with new plantings each year, making it one of the most reliable regions for long-term production.
KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal has become South Africa’s fastest-growing macadamia-producing province. The South Coast, stretching from Port Edward through Paddock, has recorded significant new orchard plantings. Former sugarcane land is being converted to macadamia orchards, supported by modern irrigation methods. Local processing plants and export companies have invested heavily in the area, creating a strong value chain that benefits growers. KwaZulu-Natal now produces the largest share of the country’s macadamia crop.
Limpopo
Limpopo was the birthplace of South Africa’s macadamia industry, with early plantings in Levubu and Tzaneen. Many of the country’s oldest orchards are found here, some over 20 years old. While Limpopo does not dominate production today, it remains an important region with a balance of mature orchards and ongoing expansion. The province benefits from favorable microclimates and experienced farmers with deep industry knowledge.
Emerging Regions: Eastern and Western Cape
Beyond the three main producers, the Eastern and Western Cape are emerging players. New orchards are being established in areas like Port St Johns, Mossel Bay, and Robertson. While production here remains small, these provinces show promise as farmers look for new climates to diversify supply.
Why These Provinces Excel
- Climate and Soil: Warm, humid conditions in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, and favorable microclimates in Limpopo, create ideal environments for macadamias.
- Irrigation Infrastructure: Established water systems in Mpumalanga and modern drip irrigation in KwaZulu-Natal support orchard health and expansion.
- Industry Maturity: Limpopo provides a foundation of experience, Mpumalanga has large-scale production, and KwaZulu-Natal leads in growth and investment.
- New Plantings: Expansion is strong across all three major provinces, with KwaZulu-Natal adding the largest number of new hectares.
Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo remain the best provinces in South Africa for macadamia nut production. Mpumalanga offers stability and scale, KwaZulu-Natal leads in growth and investment, and Limpopo provides legacy orchards with strong farming expertise. The Eastern and Western Cape are emerging regions with future potential. For farmers and investors, these provinces present the most promising opportunities to tap into South Africa’s thriving macadamia industry.
