The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and other stakeholders, is driving farmer empowerment through the Kaonafatso Ya Dikgomo programme. The initiative focuses on equipping small-scale and emerging farmers with practical knowledge to improve livestock production while fostering stronger links with industry experts.

Today, farmers in Leudoringstad took part in information sessions that highlighted critical aspects of livestock farming. The training covered animal nutrition, genetics, health, livestock management, and veld condition assessment. Each session was designed to address everyday challenges faced by emerging farmers and provide workable solutions to strengthen their operations.

Key Training Areas

  • Animal Nutrition
Farmers learned about balanced feed, supplementation strategies, and seasonal feeding practices to improve livestock productivity.
  • Animal Genetics
The session focused on breeding techniques, selection of superior traits, and using genetics to build sustainable herds.
  • Animal Health
Farmers received guidance on disease prevention, vaccination schedules, and proper veterinary care.
  • Livestock Management
The training emphasised record-keeping, grazing management, and financial planning to strengthen farm businesses.
  • Veld Condition Assessment
Farmers were taught how to monitor and manage rangelands to ensure sustainable grazing and long-term productivity.

The Kaonafatso Ya Dikgomo programme has become a key driver of livestock development in the province. It not only imparts technical knowledge but also creates opportunities for farmers to network with government officials, researchers, and agribusiness stakeholders.

By focusing on practical training, the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is ensuring that emerging farmers have the tools to run viable farming enterprises. The programme also contributes to food security, rural job creation, and the broader growth of the agricultural sector.

Farmers who participated in the Leudoringstad sessions are now better equipped to improve herd quality, protect their livestock, and manage their farms more efficiently, setting a strong foundation for future success.
