Minister John Steenhuisen, joined by North West MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Madoda Sambatha, visited Rysmierbult yesterday to oversee a major cattle vaccination campaign against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).
Before the vaccinations began, the Minister and MEC met with local farmers to hear their concerns and provide updates on disease control strategies. The engagement gave farmers a chance to ask questions and learn more about how the government is addressing livestock health challenges.
Approximately 300 communal cattle are being vaccinated as part of this campaign. The initiative aims to protect livestock, secure rural livelihoods, and strengthen food security in the region. FMD remains one of the most serious threats to livestock health, and proactive vaccination is a critical measure to reduce its spread.
The visit highlights the Department of Agriculture and Rural Developmentās commitment to controlling and managing disease outbreaks nationwide. Officials stressed that consistent collaboration with farmers is essential to safeguard the agricultural economy and ensure sustainable farming practices.
By prioritizing animal health, the campaign supports both farmers and the wider community. A healthier herd improves productivity, secures incomes, and contributes to a stronger rural economy.
