Livestock farmers in and around King Cetshwayo District Municipality recently attended a knowledge-sharing session at Inkosi Owen Sithole College of Agriculture under uMfolozi Local Municipality. The engagement, themed ‘Indigenous Chickens and Food Security,’ aimed to equip farmers with the latest practices in livestock production. It formed part of a series of information day sessions held at all six of the provincial Department of Agriculture’s research stations.
The sessions were led by livestock researchers who conduct studies and disseminate findings to farmers. Their work helps proactively guide the agricultural sector by providing practical solutions to production challenges. Farmers gained insights into animal nutrition, pasture management, feedlots, and cattle production, as well as strategies to address issues like poor growth rates in cattle and goats.
MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms. Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, highlighted the importance of these engagements. She noted that consistent investment in knowledge acquisition allows the department to deliver solutions for farmers. She also encouraged young people to enter the agricultural sector, stressing that their energy and dynamism are crucial for sustaining and growing the industry. “We depend on young people to elevate the agricultural sector to new heights. The sector is infused with science and cutting-edge technology, ensuring it remains dynamic and rewarding,” she said.
Around 100 farmers attended the session, which also featured exhibitions from various stakeholders outside the main hall. Demonstrations showcased modern farming technologies, including animal feed innovations, indigenous goat and chicken processing, and production of products such as wors from indigenous goats.
Farmers were trained on critical topics, including pasture management for smallholder farmers, indigenous chicken breeding and rearing, and animal health management. These sessions provide practical, actionable knowledge that farmers can implement immediately to improve livestock productivity and profitability.
The information day highlighted the role of research-driven knowledge transfer in empowering farmers and promoting food security. By equipping farmers with modern techniques and fostering youth involvement, the department aims to strengthen the livestock sector and ensure sustainable growth across the province.
