On Friday 5 September, the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) Vhembe West agro-ecological zone hosted an informative session on potato production. The event, themed “Potato Production in the Changing Environment,” took place at the Vhembe West agro-ecological zone offices and attracted both current and aspiring potato producers.
Potatoes are among South Africa’s most consumed staple foods. They contribute to national food security and support thousands of livelihoods in the agricultural sector. The crop is not only valued for its role in household diets but also for its contribution to the economy through trade and processing.
The session featured a presentation by Mr. Tshianeo Mathidi, a respected figure in the potato farming community. He encouraged farmers to recognize the opportunities in potato production, stressing that success requires both technical knowledge and resilience in adapting to environmental challenges. Mathidi also emphasized the adaptability of potatoes as a crop in changing climates. He explained that while the crop offers strong economic returns, farmers must prepare for issues such as erratic rainfall, soil degradation, and rising input costs.
A key highlight of the presentation was funding. Mathidi outlined different procedures available to farmers seeking financial assistance. He pointed to government programs, agricultural finance institutions, and cooperative funding models as pathways to expand or strengthen potato production. Access to funding, he noted, allows farmers to invest in quality seed, irrigation systems, and modern farming technologies.
Participants gained practical knowledge about potato farming and left better equipped to pursue opportunities in the sector. The session gave farmers tools to understand the market and dietary demand for potatoes, explore funding mechanisms for farming operations, and build resilience strategies for shifting agricultural conditions. The LDARD Vhembe West agro-ecological zone reaffirmed its role as a support hub for local farmers by facilitating knowledge exchange and providing pathways to sustainable production.
