On Friday, 5 September, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, attended a significant event at the KwaNondabuya Community Hall in Umkhanyakude District. This gathering marked a pivotal moment for smallholder bean farmers in the region, as they gained access to stable and credible markets through the Radical Agrarian Socio-Economic Transformation (RASET) programme.
The RASET initiative aims to transform the food value chain in KwaZulu-Natal by redirecting public expenditure to procure food items from smallholder farmers and small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs). This strategy is designed to empower local farmers, enhance food security, and stimulate economic growth within rural communities.
Ms kaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasized the importance of this development, noting that it provides farmers with reliable market access, thereby ensuring consistent income streams and reducing the vulnerability associated with market fluctuations. She highlighted that such initiatives are crucial for fostering sustainable agricultural practices and improving the livelihoods of rural households.
The event was attended by various stakeholders, including local farmers, agricultural experts, and government officials. It served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, with discussions focusing on best practices in bean cultivation, post-harvest handling, and market engagement strategies.
Farmers expressed their gratitude for the support provided through the RASET programme, acknowledging the positive impact it has had on their operations. Many noted that the assurance of a stable market has encouraged them to increase production and invest in improving the quality of their produce.
The KwaNondabuya Community Hall event underscores the ongoing efforts by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to support small-scale farmers and promote inclusive economic development in the province. Through initiatives like RASET, the department continues to play a vital role in transforming the agricultural landscape and enhancing food security for all.
