The Interprovincial Benchmarking Programme, held in Germiston, Gauteng, brought together the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provincial governments to share knowledge and enhance government effectiveness. The programme was led by Premiers Thamisanqa Ntuli of KwaZulu-Natal and Panyaza Lesufi of Gauteng.

Attendees included MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms. Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, along with several MECs, director generals, heads of departments, and senior officials. The initiative aims to equip provincial executives and officials with the skills and knowledge required to improve government systems, ultimately leading to efficient service delivery.

KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng play key roles in South Africa’s economy. KwaZulu-Natal hosts Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest and busiest harbour, while Gauteng is the country’s economic and commercial hub. These provinces are strategically positioned to influence national growth and agricultural development.

During the programme, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa and her Gauteng counterpart, Ms. Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, concentrated on critical agricultural issues. Discussions focused on addressing food insecurity, sharing best practices, and promoting climate-resilient agriculture to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“Politically, it is important that those serving under the Government of National Unity convene to share best practices in governance. This ensures clear policy direction and effective strategies to address challenges in our communities,” said kaMadlopha-Mthethwa. She added that challenges such as the 30 per cent US tariffs require the provinces to explore alternative international markets to support local producers and alleviate the burden on farmers.

The two-day benchmarking programme concluded today, marking a step forward in interprovincial collaboration. By sharing knowledge and strategies, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng aim to strengthen governance, boost agricultural productivity, and create sustainable solutions for the challenges facing communities and farmers across South Africa.
