Farm safety remains a critical concern for South Africa’s agricultural community after a farmer in the Harrismith district was allegedly assaulted during a housebreaking incident on his property earlier this month.

Private security officers arrested three suspects, aged between 29 and 40, following an alleged housebreaking and theft, as well as an assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. All stolen items were successfully recovered.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday, 4 February 2026, at approximately 10:00. The farmer had briefly left his property to fetch one of his employees, leaving the farm unattended for a short period. Upon returning to the farm office, he discovered that two laptops, which had been left on a desk, were missing.

Suspecting theft, the farmer immediately went back to the field where he had left his employee. The employee reported seeing three unknown individuals running across the field shortly before the farmer’s return. Acting swiftly, the farmer pursued the suspects and managed to confront one of them, questioning him about the stolen laptops. While engaging with the individual, the other two suspects allegedly appeared suddenly and attacked him. The farmer was reportedly struck on the head with a stone, sustaining an open wound.

Private security officers responded promptly to the scene and intervened. Their quick action not only prevented further harm but also led to the recovery of the two stolen laptops. All three suspects were arrested on the farm and later handed over to the South African Police Service in Harrismith for further processing.

The suspects have been charged with housebreaking and theft, as well as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
