The Department, under the leadership of MEC Lebogang Motlhaping together with Head of Department Mr Zolile Monakali, began the day with an early morning briefing focused on key operational engagements planned for Upington and the wider ZF Mgcawu District. The briefing set a clear direction for the day and aligned all teams on service delivery priorities and field activities. It emphasized the importance of strengthening departmental operations across the district while ensuring that stakeholder engagement remains a central focus. The leadership team also highlighted the need to assess strategic agricultural infrastructure that supports long term development in the region. This preparation ensured that all planned visits and meetings were structured, coordinated, and aligned with departmental goals.
The programme for the day focused on improving agricultural service delivery and strengthening collaboration between government officials and sector stakeholders. A key part of the schedule included a visit to the proposed district office that is intended to accommodate departmental staff in ZF Mgcawu. This visit aimed to assess the suitability of the site and its potential to improve operational efficiency and accessibility of services for both staff and the public. The leadership team also planned a feedback session with departmental officials to discuss workplace conditions, operational challenges, and service delivery priorities. These engagements provided a platform for open communication and practical problem solving within the department.
Another important component of the programme involved direct engagement with local farmers in the district. These discussions focused on understanding the real challenges faced by farmers, including production constraints, market access difficulties, and infrastructure limitations. Farmers also shared insights into opportunities that could be strengthened through government support and collaboration. This engagement helped the department gather first hand information that can guide future interventions and policy implementation. It also reinforced the importance of maintaining strong relationships between government and agricultural producers to support food security and rural development.
The day further included oversight visits to key research facilities, starting with the Karakoel Research Station. The purpose of this visit was to assess ongoing research activities and evaluate the condition of existing infrastructure. Research stations play a vital role in advancing agricultural innovation, improving production methods, and supporting climate resilient farming practices. The team also visited the Eiland Research Station to evaluate its contribution to agricultural development in the Northern Cape. These visits helped leadership understand how research institutions are supporting farmers and contributing to sector growth through scientific development and practical solutions.
The engagements in the ZF Mgcawu District reflect the Department’s ongoing commitment to strengthening service delivery, supporting farmers, and ensuring that research institutions continue to play a meaningful role in agricultural advancement. By combining operational oversight, stakeholder engagement, and infrastructure assessment, the Department is working to build a more efficient and responsive agricultural system. These activities also reinforce the importance of collaboration between government leadership, officials, farmers, and research institutions. Through sustained engagement and strategic planning, the Department aims to improve agricultural productivity, support rural development, and ensure long term sustainability in the sector.
