The Agri5 Expo 2026 held at Tzaneen Country Lodge on Thursday, 18 June 2026, placed Limpopo’s agricultural sector in the spotlight as key leaders, farmers, and industry stakeholders gathered to showcase the province’s growing production capacity. The event, which runs over two days and concludes on Friday, 19 June 2026, created a platform for collaboration between government, private-sector partners, and farming communities. Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Nakedi Kekana attended the expo, reinforcing the provincial government’s commitment to supporting agriculture as a driver of economic growth. The gathering attracted a wide range of exhibitors who presented agricultural products, services, and innovations aimed at strengthening value chains. The atmosphere reflected strong interest in expanding agricultural opportunities and improving market access for farmers across Limpopo.

Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Odas Ngobeni played a central role in welcoming attendees and highlighting the importance of the region within South Africa’s agricultural landscape. He expressed pride in the municipality’s reputation as one of the country’s most productive farming regions, supported by fertile soils and a favourable climate. He pointed to the strong output of avocados, bananas, and citrus fruits that are produced in the area and exported to international markets. These exports continue to contribute significantly to both local livelihoods and the national economy. His address reinforced the importance of continued investment in infrastructure and farmer support to sustain this level of production.

The presence of LDARD Mopani District Acting Director Makanani Nkuna and other government and sector representatives further strengthened the significance of the event. Their participation reflected a coordinated effort to align agricultural development strategies across different levels of government. Stakeholders used the platform to engage with farmers and discuss challenges affecting production, logistics, and market access. The collaboration between public and private sectors was visible through the wide range of exhibitors showcasing farming inputs, technology solutions, and agro-processing innovations. This collective participation demonstrated a shared commitment to building a more resilient and competitive agricultural economy in Limpopo.

In her keynote address, MEC Nakedi Kekana emphasized the essential role of traditional leaders in supporting agricultural development across the province. She noted that access to land under traditional leadership structures continues to enable both primary farming and agro-processing activities. This access has contributed to the growth of small-scale and emerging farmers who are now participating more actively in formal agricultural markets. She highlighted that many of the exhibits at the Agri5 Expo 2026 reflected the success of these land-use arrangements. Her remarks underscored the importance of cooperation between traditional leadership and government in unlocking agricultural potential.

MEC Kekana also commended Mayor Ngobeni for his focus on youth empowerment through agricultural programmes within the Greater Tzaneen municipality. She stressed that agriculture remains one of the most important sectors for job creation and economic development in Limpopo. According to her address, the sector is a top priority for the provincial government and aligns closely with the vision of Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba. Although the Premier was unable to attend due to urgent state responsibilities, her commitment to agricultural development was reaffirmed through ongoing provincial programmes. The MEC’s message reinforced the importance of creating pathways for young people to enter and succeed in agriculture.

Youth Month formed an important part of the context of the event, with MEC Kekana reflecting on the significance of June 16 and its legacy. She praised both backyard and commercial farmers for adopting innovative farming methods that improve productivity and sustainability. She contrasted the challenges faced by the youth of 1976 with the opportunities available to today’s generation, particularly in agriculture and innovation. She encouraged young people to use creativity and modern techniques to build businesses, create employment, and strengthen food security. Her remarks positioned agriculture as a powerful tool for transformation and youth-led economic development.

Farmers attending the expo were recognized as the backbone of Limpopo’s agricultural sector, with MEC Kekana expressing appreciation for their continued dedication. She encouraged them to expand their participation in initiatives like the Agri5 Expo to other districts across the province. Such expansion, she noted, would help broaden access to knowledge, markets, and support services for more farmers. The event also highlighted the importance of continuous engagement between farmers and government to address challenges and identify growth opportunities. The strong turnout and participation demonstrated the sector’s readiness to grow and adapt.

The Agri5 Expo 2026 in Tzaneen stands as a clear reflection of Limpopo’s agricultural ambition and potential. It brought together key stakeholders who share a common goal of strengthening food production, expanding market access, and supporting rural development. The participation of MEC Nakedi Kekana and other leaders reinforced the government’s focus on agriculture as a strategic economic pillar. As the event concludes, its impact is expected to continue through new partnerships, improved farming practices, and increased investment interest. The expo has once again confirmed Limpopo’s position as a leading agricultural hub in South Africa.
