Symptoms Of Early Blight You Should Look Out For In Potatoes

Early blight is a common fungal disease that affects potato plants. It is caused by the fungus Alternaria solani and can result in significant yield loss if not properly managed. Here are the symptoms of early blight that you should look out for in potatoes:

  1. Leaf Lesions: The most noticeable symptom of early blight is the appearance of dark, concentric lesions on the leaves of the potato plant. These lesions often start as small, brown spots that gradually enlarge and develop concentric rings, giving them a target-like appearance. The lesions may have a yellow halo around them.
  2. Stem Lesions: Early blight can also affect the stems of potato plants. Infected stems may show dark, sunken lesions that can girdle the stem and cause wilting or dieback of the plant.
  3. Fruit and Tuber Lesions: The disease can spread to the potato tubers, causing lesions on the skin. These lesions are usually dark brown or black, and they may be sunken or have a corky texture. In severe cases, the lesions can penetrate deep into the flesh of the tubers, leading to rotting.
  4. Defoliation: As the disease progresses, infected leaves may turn yellow and start to wither and die. Severe defoliation can weaken the plant and reduce its ability to produce tubers.
  5. Spore Production: Under favorable conditions, the fungus produces spores that appear as dark, velvety or olive-green patches on the infected plant parts. These spores can be easily spread by wind, rain, or human activities, contributing to the spread of the disease.

It’s important to note that the symptoms of early blight can be similar to those of other potato diseases, such as late blight or bacterial diseases. If you suspect early blight, it is recommended to consult with a local agricultural extension office or a plant disease specialist for a proper diagnosis and appropriate management strategies.
